Geographical Indications
Cachaça Paraty, Vale dos Vinhedos wines, Cerrado Mineiro coffee, Corupá bananas, Costa Negra shrimp, Champagne wines, Roquefort cheeses, Paris perfumes, Tequila, and Prosciutto di San Daniele — these are examples of geographical names around the world that signify a distinction for products originating from those regions.
Geographical Indications (GIs) are distinctive signs used to identify the origin or provenance of a product or service based on either its natural and human characteristics or its reputation.
In the case of an Indication of Origin (IP), the product comes from a specific region but is not necessarily originated there. For example, “Paris perfumes” are associated with Paris, though their main origin is the city of Grasse in southern France.
In Designation of Origin (DO), products are both from and originated in the defined region, embodying local characteristics influenced by natural and human factors. Examples include Vale dos Vinhedos, Napa Valley, and Rioja.
Registration with INPI is declarative, and the title grants recognition by Brazil of exclusivity.
